CT Transportation System

Connecticut sits between two of America's largest metropolitan areas, New York and Boston, and is at the center of the BosWash Megalopolis, an area with more than 55 million people. Interstates & Controlled Access Highways

I-95 - CT Coastline, connects New York to New Haven to Providence to Boston.

I-91 - Center of CT, connects New Haven to Hartford to Springfield.

I-84 - Horizontal center of CT, connects NY/NJ to Hartford to Boston.

Merritt Parkway - Runs parallel with I-95, connects New York to New Haven to Hartford (No Commercial Vehicles Allowed.)

State Routes 7, 8, 9 - North/South highways connecting I-95 to other state interstates.

Highway Improvements:
The I-95 New Haven Harbor program is expected to be completed in 2015 when a new 10-lane I-95 bridge is finished. Construction has already begun on the project. The project also includes a new commuter rail station (completed) and new lanes at the merge of I-91 and I-95.

Commuter/Passenger Rail

Metro-North - Service from New Haven to New York (Grand Central Station.) Travel time from New Haven to Grand Central is 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Stations in Connecticut's Central Coast include: Southport, Fairfield, Bridgeport, Stratford, Derby, Ansonia, Milford, New Haven - Union Station and New Haven - State Street.
New stations are planned over next few years in Fairfield, Orange and West Haven.

Shoreline East - Commuter service from Eastern Connecticut Shoreline to New Haven.

Amtrak - New Haven's Union Station is one of Amtrak's busiest terminals in the country providing direct service to Boston, New York and Washington DC. The nation's only high-speed train, the Acela Express, makes daily stops in New Haven.

Freight Rail

CSX provides freight rail service in Connecticut's Central Coast.

Materials shipped in the state include: iron/steel, construction materials, fly ash and automobiles. CSX serves 50 industries in Connecticut.

They operate a rail-to-truck metals distribution facility and a rail-to-truck trans-loading facility in New Haven.

US Airways operates flights from New Haven to Philadelphia daily. There are 5 departures to
Philadelphia each day.

The towns surrounding the airport settled long-time disputes in March 2009 and agreed to the expansion of runway safety zones and terminal improvements. There is now a united commitment to attract new airline business to the airport.
